We have compiled some data recovery news for your reading enjoyment.

Security-SAS 70 Type II Report Card

Last July, DriveSavers successfully completed its first SAS 70 Type II audittSAS 70 is a Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) for service organizations. It demonstrates that a firm has proper controls and processes in place to protect data belonging to customers. The SAS 70 Type II audit is the definitive standard preferred by businesses who are required to comply with section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley act.

The auditing process is conducted by control-oriented professionals who have experience in accounting, auditing and information security. DriveSavers is proud to announce that it passed this year’s audit and were once again found to be in compliance with security protocols.

Because data security and privacy have always been paramount at DriveSavers, completion of the SAS 70 audit provides additional peace of mind to our customers and enhances the quality of exemplary service they value. Click here to read more about our SAS 70 certification.

Testimonial

I heard you were the best and you certainly proved it. As you are well aware, there are a lot of companies that promise the world and fail to deliver.

The data recovered by your technicians was from a bad camera card and had about 220 pictures of a vacation my wife and I just took to Italy. Obviously the pictures are very important to us. If all your customers are as pleased as me, I’m sure you’ll be in business a very long time. The data recovery went very well.

Hardware data recovery

Along with fast development of information in 21st century, computers have been applied to commercially and individually aspects with a remarkable growing speed. So it makes various electronic information, namely, the data – – become important and valuable property which cannot get lost both for enterprises or individuals. How to guarantee the integrity, usability and security of storage data has then become a crucial question day by day.

As we know, data recovery can be category in to 3 levels

Level 1 Logical Data Recovery.
Applicable for Hard Drives manifest itself as following symptoms: Partition Loss, File corruption Virus Attack, Accidental Disk Format, File deletion… Of all the levels, this is the most widely performed. However, according to the relevant reports only 20-30% percent of all the data recovery cases can be addressed using software tools alone. On the other hand, if software tools are applied alone the risk of losing user data increases significantly, which undermines any professional data recovery level.

Recovery Time = 1 Day
Price = $375-$550

Level 2 Firmware and bad sector Restoration
Disk manifest itself as follows
1. HDD is identified incorrectly.
2. HDD starts the motor and then hangs.
3. HDD capacity is identified incorrectly in the BIOS, usually less.
4. HDD can identify correctly in the BIOS, but all sectors are displayed as bad sectors, or disk partitioning is impossible.
5. HDD is very slow in reading/writing/formatting.

Recovery Time = 1 – 2 Day
Price = $650-$1100

Level 3. Hardware or mechanical data recovery
This level handles with hardware component issues which can’t be repaired but the only solution is to have the components exchanged using donor parts. Strictly speaking, Level 3 is part of Level 2: Firmware and bad sector Restoration. Such as Head stack problems, Spindle motor problems and Platter Alignment & spacer problems

Recovery Time= at least 2 day
Price= at least USD1000

A lot of data recovery companies focus on Level 1 and Level 2 data recovery, but not Level 3. Why do not they want to dig gold form Level 3?

The answer is very simple, they consider that Level 3 hardware or mechanical data recovery is too hard to deal with. Actually, it was a challenge problem for all the DR experts in a few years before. Except we have to invest hundreds of thousands money into this field for establishing a class 100 clean room, technique problems can not be overcome.

For Head stack problems: how to dismount the head stack and then reinstall properly without damaging the sensitive heads is the key.

Spindle motor problems: only a few top professionals with plenty of practical experience can handle spindle motor problems Platter alignment & spacer problems: so far they are still a headache for most of us without proper tools

However, since a few professional data recovery tool providers researched and develop into this depth level, some easy to use and cost effective tools was launched successfully and have been gaining a popularity from DR experts, IT technicians and Forensics. The tool can assure you to operate on your HD on a relatively stable table, making your job easier and more reliable. Also, maintains the original cylinder status by removing and placing each platter of the multiple platters together, so that allows you to change multiple platters without moving the platters out of alignment with each other which otherwise will result in data corruption.

Class 100 clean room can provide a good environment for drive disassembly and head/platter exchange. But it is not absolutely indispensible. This job also can be done successfully in a closed clean space.
