Rising insecurity has spawned the birth of a new data recovery software solution that will help owners of laptops and high end mobile phones ensure that their personal information is safe if their gadgets are stolen.

East African Data Handlers has launched two solutions that will allow owners of gadgets to install tracking software  which can retrieve any data on the gadgets.

“Companies and individuals are losing more data than ever due to theft of laptops or mobile phones.  With the increase in dependence on those gadgets, more data is being stored in them — leading to more value being lost when they are stolen,” said Mr George Njoroge, Managing Director of East African Data Handlers.

East African Data Handlers is a forensics and data recovery software that provides solutions for firms, allowing them to re-access any information stored on corrupted, damaged or stolen hardware.

Under two product lines — Ujanja Mobile and Ujanja Laptop — customers can install data recovery software  to track their gadgets for Sh1,999 for mobiles and Sh7,500 for laptops annually.

“Both solutions will alert the user once a new IP address or SIM card is used by the computer or put into the phone by sending a message to a set of preferred numbers or emails,” said Mr Njoroge.

Laptop users will be able to remotely retrieve data stored on the laptop using Ujanja, meaning they would suffer no data loss even if they never get the laptop back.

Mobile users will be sent an SMS stating what number is now using the phone, and future applications will see the SMS include information on where the thief is in real-time using telecom location servicesinsead of .
